A recent VMware survey found that more than half of respondents (57%) are operating fewer than 10 Kubernetes clusters and only 20% have more than 50 clusters in production. Operating a larger number of small Kubernetes clusters provides more flexibility and efficiency (e.g., better security and isolation, resource utilization, compliance, and recoverability), but most early adopters start with just a few clusters (e.g., one for production and a couple more for development and test) due to the complexity associated with managing multiple Kubernetes clusters with open source and legacy tools.
