From Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the rapid urbanisation of Asia, to Central Asia’s infrastructure connectivity ambitions, Africa’s transport and mining expansion, and South America’s growing investment in sustainable resource development, these transformative programmes all share one common foundation—the ground beneath them.

Every bridge, metro, tunnel, mine, airport, port, industrial city, renewable energy facility, and high-rise development ultimately depends on understanding, managing, and engineering the ground on which it is built. Yet every region presents its own unique geotechnical challenges. Engineers must contend with expansive and collapsible soils, karstic limestone, highly weathered rock, seismic activity, landslides, permafrost, soft marine deposits, liquefaction, flooding, desert environments, unstable slopes, and increasingly complex underground conditions. As projects become larger, deeper, and more technically demanding, these ground conditions have become one of the most critical determinants of project success, cost certainty, safety, and long-term resilience.

At the same time, governments and project developers are under increasing pressure to deliver faster, build more sustainably, reduce construction risks, improve asset performance, and embrace digital transformation. Advances in ground investigation, digital subsurface modelling, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, geospatial analytics, advanced ground improvement, geosynthetics, real-time monitoring, and underground construction technologies are fundamentally changing how geotechnical risks are identified, managed, and mitigated. Ensuring these innovations are shared and applied consistently across regions has never been more important.
